...and during the scheduled break in the ASRL contract bidding, Rochdale Raptors' boss Theo took a moment to talk with our reporter:
Q: What the hell happened with Fonua? He was on 50k, and you let him go, and now he's on 120k?
A: If I had resigned him at his 8/6 rating, his minimum salary would have been 250k, counting the extension fee...and for the 4 year contract I wanted to give him, the salary would have been 400k...so I'd say that I did pretty well, even if he tails off a bit, which I don't believe he will.
Q: One RSC player attempted to be poached from you, I see...
A: Yeah, and Malakai Watene-Zelezniak, you know, it cost me 50k to match, and given things, it was an easy decision to match, and give him a 3 year deal...if he does well, he could get a new contract, if he doesn't, not anything to cry over.
Q: And why did you go after Matt Duffie, anyway, he's worthless!
A: The numbers say he's a good depth piece, and the price was right, especially as he's got two years to show me that he can contribute enough to get an extension, which is what every player wants.
Q: So, after the 24 hour break, the bidding recommences - looking for anyone?
A: If we don't get anyone else, I've got 29 in the senior side, 27 in the RSC, so, whether the players I have will be sufficient to make the playoffs or not, at least I'll have ample options available.
Q: Opening day, at Spotland, against Canberra Carnage...
A: They made the playoffs last season, but that's last season, which is both good and bad, since they lost their elimination semifinal, they're definitely not happy with their third place finish last season, and their activity in contract bidding shows that they're reaching for more than a playoff bye this season...
Q: But are you bidding on anyone?
A: Well, you'll find out when the contract bidding recommences, won't you?
