I have had some discussion with coaches about the future of the Mad Barry drafts.
Personally, Im in favour of keeping the 1st Mad Barry style where coaches with less elite players get first shot at upcoming talent. I think that should stay but if you disagree, have your say.
What seems to be a bit more contentious is the format of the second Mad Barry which relies on extra efforts to get a higher pick. I was always uncomfortable in picking a draft order for this as I felt any effort was a good effort. Extra payment for jobs pretty much covers the effort part. Some people are just time poor. We did change to a lottery system over the last two season where I divided coaches into two pools in terms of people who do regular/big jobs and those who don't. Should we continue with the two pool draft system? Should we go for an alternate whole lottery where the draw is done randomly as any coach who puts in their order every week should have a chance in a whole comp lottery? Let me know what you think.
Another idea suggested was the reintroduction of the feeder draft system. This system involved coaches choosing an NRL/ESL club to draft talent from. I personally think this idea has merit. The big plus from it is that apart from 10 teams, the rest of the teams would remain untouched by this draft. I think this is a good thing as talent from the clubs not picked in that draft will be more enticing for the following draft. It ensures that the talent well is not drained too much. Does this idea have legs? Share your point of view.
I will say that whatever we come up with is a view towards future Mad Barry's and not a kneejerk change to the Mad Barry coming up in a week's time.
Have your say!
