With Contract Bidding to begin tomorrow, Darwin Dragons's new Coach, Frad Bittler was still beaming, after the first trials of the NRL season this weekend.
"The trials proved that Darwin is the home for player development", claimed Bittler. "We don't need to go out buying a premiership.....we have the best Junior Nursery right here", he continued.
"In recent years, graduates of our Academy has included stars such as Nathan Cleary, Euan Aitken, Latrell Mitchell, David Fafita, Tyson Frizzel, Blake Lawrie, Jai Arrow,
Jack Bird, Zac Lomax, Reece Robson and Curtis Scott to name a few......but after the weekend, you can add future stars Bronson Xerri (Pronounced Sherry), Beau Fermor,
Phoenix Crossland, Tristan Sailor, Jake Turpin and Josh Kerr, who all starred for their respective NRL Clubs", gloated Bittler.
Xerri is the dux of the graduate class this season...he'd have already have a first-grade debut too before being old enough to have a drink. The wider rugby league world sat up and took notice after Xerri's swerve and verve lit up a soggy Shark Park on Saturday night, Xerri being the brightest spark in his side's win. With a runaway try, a hand in another and a long-range bust down the right edge, Xerri made a serious fist of his first trial outing for the season. "I was happy with my performance. There's still little things I can improve on. I'll get to training and do that', said Xerri.
Coach Bittler continued, "Our Academy brought Xerri right through Darwin's vaunted juniors system, and I have no doubt the Australian Schoolboys and NSW under 20s Origin rep will indeed make it. It’s probably a reflection of where he is in the game. He’s an 18-year-old kid and he was started in the centres," Dittler said.
“That kind of shows the pre-season he’s had. He’s right in the mix. He’s a local junior who has come through our system and he’s a really good talent.
“That was a great experience for him out there tonight and we can't wait to see what he produces next week
“He’s developing really nicely. He is going to be in the picture definitely this year.”
The future of the Dragons is looking bright, although Bittler did add that the Dragons will be keeping their eyes open for a bargain deal to complete their squad for thr 2019 season. "We only have $90000 to spend under the cap, but we still hope to pick up one jem to compliment our talented squad", highlighted Bittler!
