Adelaide Attitude star, James Maloney has won the 2020 Roger Bossert Medal, beating the field by a mere point to claim the prestigious award for player of the season.
Maloney finished the season with a 18 Bossert points, a single point ahead of the seasons top try scorer Rueben Garrick from Darwin, Teammate Felise Kaufusi & Merseysdies Jarrod Crocker were another point further back, tieing for 3rd place on 16 points in the tightly fought battle.
A humble and emotional Maloney spoke of what his Bossert Medal meant to him.
"I'm a little bit nervous here. I can't explain what it means to be standing here in front of family, friends and teammates especially. But the first people I'd like to thank are the teammates I train with every day and spend most of my time with," Maloney said.
"This award is much theirs as it is mine so special thanks to those boys. The coaching staff that has put the structures in place for us to execute, our medical staff, our fans who travel to watch us play. The coach Mack, well, I had my doubts about him when I cam eto the club. I am good friends with Aucklands coach & he had little good to say about Mack, but the money I offered to play here, I had to look past his reputation”
"In the end though, he was a decent, albeit somewhat drunken leader, & he is nowhere near as agitating as what was described to me.
"
"To my wife, Jessica, thank you very much for everything you do for me, I can't thank you enough – you're my rock"
Maloney went on again to highlight the job his teammates have done in providing him the platform to deliver what he has in 2020.
"We play the game for friendships; I get to run around with my best mates week in and week out. It's about having fun out there, it's a team game," he said.
"The boys I have around me, they do all the hard work for me, I put the cream on top. It's been a heck of a year, I couldn't be more proud standing up here with my Bossert award."
" My big fear now is Auckland. WE play them next week after stumbling in week 1 of the finals against Hull, & I think they might have our measure. They are the dark horse for the title, & I think we have run our race to be honest. WE have overachieved to get this far"
