In a move that might surprise some people, the Florida Panthers have decided not to offer contracts to any of their five players just out of contract.
"Contract bidding," head coach and club 1A Theo Kamis, "makes it likely that we'll find more eloquent deals in the open market, than by resigning our free agents to the values required under the Rules."
In other news, the four players in the Panthers' RSC system that are out of contract also will not be offered deals immediately, Theo preferring to wait to see what offers they get.
And, the players that were safety-netted previous to Theo's arrival, he confirmed that there will be no changes in the safety net list.
As for where the Panthers are moving to, Theo sadly confirmed that they will not be moving to Campinas, Brasil, home of his previous club, Ponte Preta Billy Goats, due to turmoil in the Association there, and, for that matter, much of the entire country. "I don't regret trying to bring rugby league to Brasil, but sometimes, these things don't work out," he sighed mournfully.
When asked if that meant that he won't go back to places he's already been, Theo agreed that he wasn't going to return to Wagga Wagga. When specifically asked about England, he demurred. However, he was wearing a black orchid in the lapel of his Palm Beach tropical suit, so could a settlement in Kiwiland be in the cards?
Theo did confirm that Australia was out, due to market saturation there. As for North America, he sighed, "There's no chance that only one club could possibly work there - ASRL would need at least four teams in relatively close proximity, and at least five years, to have a chance, and I couldn't recommend that course of action...which is a shame, because there could well be a market for league in North America."
