Due to a couple of factors, this season will be my last as the ASRL CEO and simmer.
I have been in the ASRL since 2000. As a lover of rugby league as well as being massively curious of the internet, the ASRL came at the right time for me. I enjoyed every twist and turn that ASRL seasons provided. CWB really did an amazing job back in the day and was largely responsible for setting our game up for long success.
People over time played ASRL for different reasons. For me, it started off with trying to win and playing the fool during the process. Over time, the thing I enjoyed most with ASRL was the interactions with other rugby league fans. I've had fights with some, liked interacting with the vast majority and made some friends through this wonderful game.
A few years ago, I took on the CEO and simming duties which I loved doing. I've always tried to play a straight bat and be fair to all. I'd like to think I've been pretty consistent in regard to getting things done on time.
Up until the middle of last season, my enthusiasm for the game had never truly wavered. As I said at the start of the post, Im leaving for two reasons.
1. Lack of stable coaches. ASRL is work. I've been pretty good in cutting times and doing things quicker than in the past, but running the game is still is a time commitment. The older Im getting, the more Im realising how precious time is. To run a game with only five stable coaches is not bang for my buck in regard to my time. I put absolutely no blame on coaches who have left or don't put their orders in every week. It is an increasingly busy world with more demands for our time in different areas.
If the game even had eight stable coaches, I would not be typing this post now. I love the game but its success relies on genuine participation.....and simming games where half of the comp are uncoached teams has worn my enthusiasm down. More than one current coach has voiced to me that their enthusiasm has waned in recent times as well.
2. Lack of new people attempting to play ASRL. It is one thing to to be short of coaches, but our lack of ability to attract new blood to fill coaching spots has been the ultimate killer in regard to my involvement. I tried my ass off to get new coaches over the last off-season. All we got in regard to new blood was one bloke who appeared to be very interested for about a week than went away. We managed to get three former coaches back but two of them failed to start the first round while the third coach appears to have left within the last week. I no longer have the will to chase people up or actively recruit new coaches.
I will continue CEO and simming duties until the conclusion of this season. If someone rocks up wanting to run a season, I'd happily send them the sim to continue things on. I'd like to thank the coaches here for your participation. It has been a pleasure to know you and have you be part of a pretty special game. I hope you enjoy the rest of the season.
Thank you
