The Grubber caught up with Raptors' senior assistant Jamie Rooney, and asked him, what is a secret of the Raptors' success this season, when the team in Florida didn't have success (we realised that he wouldn't tell us about the Doomsday Uber Computer for Kickarsing that's buried under the Rochdale clock tower).
His response was, shall we say, interesting, and even more so when we realised that he was sounding more and more like his boss:
You need to remember something about his (Theo) career, his first stop as a coach, in Wolverhampton (with the EIRL), came in an era when things were a lot simpler, and where he didn't need much help to run the club. Accountancy is one of his vocations, so he could do a very good job with little help.
When Chris Walker-Bush asked Theo to come back to rugby league (the FFBRL), and try to rescue the Melbourne-based Multiple Scoregasms side near mid-season, there were a LOT of problems there, from the players and staff, to the grounds lease issues, said lease issues ultimately could not be resolved despite his best efforts. So, for the rest of that season, he ran on adrenaline, and succeeded, despite the obvious strain on him. After the Grand Final, he was utterly exhausted and enervated, and needed to take a two weeks' vacation, which I had to force him to do, because resting wasn't his way then.
Now, he has an owner in Rochdale that has given him not so much control of the team - Zienia handles the business end of the operations, although she does consult with Theo, because she knows he can do it, but just because someone can do everything, doesn't mean that they should. But, within the team operations, if he needs something that he doesn't have, he doesn't need to worry about how to get it - he asks Zienia, and if it's possible, and really necessary, she will find a way to get it. And if it's not really necessary, she might get it for him anyway, on Patton's theory that the troops in the front line will ask for things that they don't need, but if possible, get them the things anyway.
So, this is what it looked and sounded like his previous season - by himself, with a little help from me...
And now, he's stepped back some, because he's had to, the game's changed so much...we both just need to remember that Zienia can roll her eyes whilst sharpening a knife...but things are a lot better now, especially since Theo's promised me that he would never require me to wear a tuxedo...
...but he did laugh when I straightened Roger Bossert's tie at the wedding last week! And Roger took it in good part, right after he straightened mine back the same way! (And Roger asked me why he couldn't wear a shirt, tie, and sweater combination, and I said, "why not?")
