How did it come to pass that the entire community of the Yipirinya School boarded luxury motorcoaches and traveled to Darwin to watch their team, the Rochdale Raptors, play the Darwin Dragons?
And how did the other elementary schools in the catchment area not get invited? Wait a minute, there was anybody in Alice Springs that cared about anybody except Darwin Dragons - howzat?
Well, when the other schools didn't want anything to do with the kids from Yipirinya, when Rochdale Raptors held clinics all over Alice Springs, Jamie Rooney nearly exploded...
...but calmed down when Raptors' boss Theo got a gleam in his eye, at exactly the same time that Zienia got a gleam in hers...eyerolls ensued...mobiles were opened...
...and off the children went, in Raptors' kit, with their entire families, Raptors and Owls scattered throughout the coaches, fresh fruit juice on tap for everybody (dry coaches, of course, with children on board)...
...and in the midst of one of the motorcoaches, the Grubber managed to chat with Theo about the children, about the Melbourne game, and about the Dragons' tilt, amidst the happy chattering of children listening to some music...
The Melbourne game, I may have been too conservative with my man-management, and with my tactics. It's a shorter season than I've been used to before, and I could have done a couple things differently there. But all credit to Melbourne, at home, coming back. The video session this week was, shall we say, not a joyous one.
As for the Caterpillars of Yipirinya School, I loved the way the indigenous lads played the game...Jamie and I tried running 80 metres to land a try, against 20 of them, and let me tell you, their instincts were spectacular, and we didn't make it in six tackles! Jamie had to kick a 50 metre blast for some points - thank heavens he brought his good boots! And the young ladies...yeah, they played as politely as they played hard, as pretty and as hard as diamonds. We did a drill, and let me tell you, we didn't have to explain twice, and we had to calm a few of them down when they didn't do as well as they wanted to (a portable video player and some dab camera work by a few of our players helped!)
About the Dragons - I think we're going to be in good shape, but the second game of this transcontinental trip across Australia, this isn't going to be an easy game. But I think the Monsters' game took us to a place where we're not going to take anything for granted. If the Dragons want to beat us, this week, they're going to have to earn it...
...oh, the kids got quiet, and they're paying rapt attention...what's on the CD?
This was...
