ASRL: THE FUTURE
Hi guys, I thought that with us being in the off-season, it is the perfect time for us to chat about the future direction of our great game. With me having an extremely busy week with work and not being able to completely update the database until next weekend, now is the perfect time to have a frank, honest discussion on what direction we take from here.
As you would know, we have a shortage of coaches. I think at the moment (through no fault of our own), there are 5-6 teams that have the vast bulk of talent in the competition. Even if we got new coaches in, they would have an uphill battle in terms of building up a club and being competitive.
I will give things a red hot crack in terms of recruiting coaches through forums during the week. However, we need to discuss how to make things more competitive for new ones that come in as I believe it would be a pretty hard slog for them at the moment.
Here are some strategies.
CLEAN SLATE
Every ten seasons or so, clear every player to go into the database and start building a team from complete scratch.
Advantages
*Every coach in the league has a fair and even crack at grabbing the players they want. By far, would be the most attractive proposition for a new coach coming in.
*The bidding strategies of every coach would be bloody interesting to watch...it would absolutely challenge every coach to work within that 6.5 million cap.
Disadvantages
*Disadvantages loyal coaches who have taken time to build up the teams they have.
*Uncoached teams would possible be weaker through starting again...coaches would naturally prefer to bid for their own clubs which leaves seconds for these uncoached clubs.
KEEP FIVE
Similar to the clean slate strategy proposed but keep five contracts from your PL clubs. A suggestion has also been made to keep five PL and five RSC contracts from your club to reward your talent spotting.
Advantages
*There will a hell of a lot of talent up for bidding.
*The bidding strategies of every coach would be very interesting
*Rewards coaches loyalty to the ASRL by being able to keep five of your very best players and future prospects.
*Uncoached teams would be stronger than if we went to the clean slate strategy.
Disadvantages
*Disadvantages loyal coaches who have taken time to build a very strong roster
*Bidding would not be as interesting without the absolute top guys...but still interesting
*Would not interest new coaches as much as the clean slate strategy.
STAY THE SAME
Keep teams the way they are at the moment.
Advantages
*Absolutely rewards loyalty to the guys that make ASRL keep going.
*Keep the continuity of the comp going.
Disadvantages
*Very hard to truly compete at the moment if you are not Sydney, Adelaide, Hull, Darwin, Auckland or Gold Coast....other rosters are noticeably weaker and less attractive. Through time (no fault of the coaches), they have pretty much cornered the market in terms of stars and/or good juniors).
Lets kick this discussion off!
